PURPOSE: To obtain an ester/amide block copolymer excellent in heat resistance, heat aging resistance, mechanical strength, etc., by using an aromatic amide as the hard segment and, e.g. an aliphatic polyester as the soft segment. CONSTITUTION: This copolymer is represented by the formula (wherein R is a 6-20C divalent aromatic hydrocarbon group; and G is an aliphatic polyester, polycarbonate or polyether-carbonate residue, or a polyorganosiloxane residue) and has a weight-average molecular weight of 30,000 to 1,000,000. It can be economically produced, for example, by a process wherein an aromatic amide having terminal active acyllactam group(s) and a diol compound [e.g. poly(caprolactone)diol] are subjected to bulk melt polymerization in the absence of a catalyst to produce a prepolymer andε-caprolactam is then removed under a reduced pressure to form a high-molecular-weight polymer.
