PURPOSE: To improve the scanning line density and obtain an ultrasonic tomographic image of superior picture quality by obtaining scanning line density which exceeds the array pitch of elements based on an aperture composing method. CONSTITUTION: A multiplexer 7 for memory selectively sends out the outputs of ultrasonic elements T1-Tn passed through an A/D converter 6 as time-series ultrasonic scanning line data to storage addresses of 1st and 2nd waveform memory parts 15 and 16 specified by a write address generating circuit 17. Then 1st and 2nd composing process parts 8 and 9 read the time-series ultrasonic scanning line data out of the 1st and 2nd waveform memory parts 15 and 16 under the control of a total control part 13 by 1st and 2nd read address generation parts 18 and 19. The read ultrasonic scanning line data are put together by the aperture composing method through 1st and 2nd adding circuits 20 and 21 to form ultrasonic scanning lines in two directions, which are outputted to an image constitution part 10 to obtain an ultrasonic tomographic image of high density.
