PURPOSE: To produce a porous metal with a simple process by sintering a porous material contg. a slurry consisting of an aq. sodium alginate soln. and a metal powder and which is burned off below the sintering temp. of the metal powder. CONSTITUTION: About 1.7wt.% sodium alginate is added to the water in a vessel 1, for example, and mixed by an agitator 2 to obtain an aq. sodium alginate soln. A. About 300cc of the soln. A is transferred to a vessel 3, and about 1kg of the stainless steel powder having about 10μm average grain diameter is added and mixed by an agitator 4 to prepare a slurry B. The slurry B is then transferred to a shallow vessel 5, a porous material 6 of a polyurethane foam having about 30mm thickness is put into the vessel 5, and the porous material 6 is impregnated with the slurry B. The porous material 6a is pressed by squeeze rollers 7a and 7b to remove the excessive slurry B from the porous material 6a and then dried, the dried porous material 6b is placed in a sintering furnace 8, the furnace is evacuated, and the material is sintered at about 1,000 deg.C for about 120min to obtain the objective porous metal 9.
