PURPOSE: To obtain a new subject monomer capable of being ring-opening polymerized to give a new oligosaccharide useful in the fields of medical cares, etc., by trifluoromethylsulfonating the hydroxyl group of 1,6-anhydrous-β-D- glucopyranose and subsequently reacting the product with phthalimide salt. CONSTITUTION: 1,6-Anhydrous-β-D-glucopyranose is dissolved in methylene chloride, dropwisely mixed with anhydrous trifluoromethanesulfonic acid and pyridine at a temperature of -10 deg.C in a nitrogen atmosphere, reacted at 0 deg.C for 2hr under stirring, and subsequently mixed with a saturated sodium bicarbonate aqueous solution to stop the reaction. The organic layer is separated and subjected to the distillation away of the solvent. The obtained product is reacted with potassium phthalimide in DMF to obtain the new ring-opening polymerizable monomer of formula II. The monomer is ring-opening polymerized to give the new oligosaccharide of formula III (R1 is phthalimide, etc.; R2 is H, benzyl; (n) is 5-7) and useful for medicines having an antitumor activity, an analgesic activity, an immunocyte-activating activity, and an opportunismic infectious disease-preventing activity, respectively, etc.
