The camshaft (10) is placed on a support (18) between an ultrasonic emitting transducer (14) and a receiving transducer (16) in an enclosure (22) filled with pref. noncorrosive liq. (24). The support features a V-groove (28) into which the cam (32) under examination is laid with its angular position determined by a stop (38).The axial position is determined by a similar stop placed against one end of the camshaft. The received signal is displayed pref. on an oscilloscope (42) and propagation is timed over the distance between the transducers, measured with a standard specimen of known thickness in the ultrasound path.
