At least one of the opposing pistons (14,15) and (16,17) is formed as a multiple-action piston. It partially defines at least two independent working chambers (21,22) and (21',22'), for precompression of fresh air. The precompressed air is supplied to the intake slots (10,11). Each working chamber has an intake aperture (25,26) and (25',26'), regulated by an intake valve (23,24) and (23',24'), for fresh air intake, and a discharge aperture (29,30) and (29',30') with a valve (27,28) and (27',28'), for air discharge.The discharge valves open into a chamber (31,31'), which has a direct flow connection to the intake slots of the cylinder (8,9). The multiple-action piston is the piston away from the crankshaft, and it also regulates the intake slots.
