In a process for mfg. a data carrier (1), areas of which have a transparent plastic layer with a lens-like structured surface (4), the latter can be produced by a machining process. Alternatively: (i) a plastic coating is applied to the data carrier (1) and an impression made in the coating; or (ii) the lens structure (4) is impressed in the coating while temp. and pressure is raised in stepped increases.Other claimed processes involve: (i) producing a separate lens structure (4) for subsequent attachment to the data carrier (1); or (ii) using an In-mould technique to form the lens structure (4) in a recess in a data carrier (1). A process for mfg. a lens structure (4) forming a security feature of data carriers, e.g. identity cards involves injection moulding. In a process for prodn. of continuous film with lens-like structured areas (4) for incorporation in data carriers (1), the lens structure is formed during film mfr. and separating and covering layers are applied for protection prior to stamping. The data carrier (1) is claimed and has a surface structure (4) with information applied by a laser. The surface structure is flush with the face of the data carrier (1). A continuous strip for prodn. of security features (4) for data carriers (1) comprises: (i) a transparent plastic film with the lens-like surface structure (4); (ii) a separating layer; and (iii) a protective covering layer. Claimed equipment for mfg. a data carrier has impressing stations, each with a moving impressing tool which travels with a passing data carrier for a given period. Further claimed equipment includes a station with a machining tool for prodn. of the surface structure.
