A transmitting antenna 11 is provided centrally on the approach to two contiguous gateways G1 and G2 (fig 2, not shown) and receiving antennas 12a, 12b are provided on the sides opposite to the transmitting antenna 11. An IC card 20 containing the identification of a bearer is interrogated by the transmitter 11 and one of the receivers 12 processes a signal transmitted by the IC card 20 and operation of the gate G1 or G2 is controlled in response to this signal. The system occupies a relatively small area without requiring a provision for a dead zone or unnecessary interrogation area outside a gate. The receiving antenna may alternatively cover the area of two transmitting antennas (fig 7, not shown), determination of which transmitting area the IC card is in being reached by measurement of the received signal strength. <IMAGE>
