A method for preparing ceramic materials from polymethylhydrogenosilanes, wherein the polysilanes are pyrolysed in the presence of at least one unsaturated cross-linking agent (II) preferably consisting of an optionally aryl-substituted, silicon-containing alkenyl and/or alkynyl compound, said agent (II) being present in a controlled amount, so that the resulting ceramics have an Si/C ratio of around 1, in the absence of a hydrosilylation catalyst. High-purity ceramics are thereby achieved. The starting ceramic precursor composition used is also disclosed. The method is useful for preparing ceramics for use, inter alia, in electronics, electro-optics, semiconductor technology and aeronautics.
