The engine (1) is boosted by a supercharger (2) driven by a V-belt (R) from the crankshaft (KW) to deliver compressed air via a cooler (5) and, e.g. a hot-wire flowmeter (6), to the inlet manifold (8).A branch (3a) from the supercharger outlet (3) leads to a connecting pipe (27) into the exhaust (15) via a regulator valve (29) operated by a controller (28). This also acts on the subsidiary throttle (18) admitting atmos. air from the intake filter (20a) to the outlet (3), and on the clutch (K) connecting the belt drive to the supercharger. It responds to inlet manifold pressure (30) and engine speed and temp.
