The hand-piece includes a head (3) which is separable from the handle (2) and which carries a surgical tool (5) driven by an internal drive mechanism (4). The site of operation is illuminated by light from two optical fibres (7, 8) of equal length. The fibres are stiffened at one end by a bridging piece (11) and connected together at the other end (9) to a module which is fastened to the rear of the hand-piece. The light is directed as closely as possible to the axis of the tool e.g. by prisms (6).
