A peripheral remains available in a networked computer system, even when the computer, to which it is directly connected, on the basis of logic faults or power supply, drops out. The peripheral has a second connection, close to its own connection to the host computer, for connection to a LAN. The additional communications connection can be driven even with the drop out of its respective computer. The availability of the peripheral is due to the drop-out probability of a computer, which has a mean-time between failures of 50-100,000 hours, being greater than the drop-out probability of the peripheral, which has a MTBF of 300,000 hours, even when this contains an additional communications port. |
