Thickening compositions consisting of: a) 45-98% by weight of polymers or copolymers, optionally cross-linked, of an unsaturated carboxylic acid constituting at least 70% by weight of the copolymer; b) 55-2% by weight of polyvinylpyrrolidone and/or of polyglycols of formula (I) c) 0-5% by weight of an inorganic or sulfonic acid and/or the salts thereof; wherein the compounds are as defined in the disclosure.t
