A water-soluble, crosslinkable prepolymer (A) is claimed, with a copolymer chain contg. units derived from a vinyl-lactam (a), vinyl alcohol (b), opt. a vinyl ester of a lower alkanoic acid (c), a vinylic crosslinker (d) and opt. a vinylic photoinitiator (e). Also claimed is (i) a process for the prodn. of prepolymer (A), by partial or complete acid or alkaline hydrolysis of a copolymer of (a) and (c), with simultaneous or subsequent derivatisation with cpds. derived from (d) and opt. from (e); (ii) a hydrogel or a polymeric network consisting mainly of (A) in crosslinked form, esp. a hydrogel in the form of a contact lens; (iii) contact lenses contg. mainly (A) in crosslinked form, obtd. by crosslinking the prepolymer; (iv) moulded prods., esp. contact lenses, consisting mainly of crosslinked (A). |
