An aqueous composition for use in permanent waving comprises a reducing agent which is thiolactic acid or a salt thereof with ammonia, monoethanolamine or isopropanolamine, and an alkali agent which is ammonium hydroxide, monoethanolamine or isopropanolamine, in free form or as a salt of the thiolactic acid.
