PURPOSE: To attain quick storage processing by preventing the retrial of reduction processing to the utmost when image data are stored while its quantity is being reduced. CONSTITUTION: Original image data received from an input device 1 are given to a gradation converter 2 and a compressor 4, in which its data quantity is reduced and the resulting data are stored in a storage device 5. The gradation converter 2 has four conversion modes as '8-bit→4-bit conversion', '8-bit→2-bit conversion', '8-bit→1-bit conversion' and 'no conversion'. A storage quantity controller 3 monitors a data reduction rate in the gradation converter 2 and selects the conversion mode for each page of the original so as to obtain a required reduction rate. Thus, the reduction rate close to an object reduction rate is easily obtained for the entire image data.
