PURPOSE: To detect malfunction of a refrigerant channel-switching valve mechanism at the time of starting heating. CONSTITUTION: An air conditioner is selectively formed with a cooling refrigerant circuit indicated by an arrow with a broken line by switching refrigerant such as fluorocarbon discharged by compressing a compressor via a four-way valve 2, and a heating refrigerant circuit indicted by an arrow with a solid line. The temperature T1 in a tube before the compressor 1 is started, and the temperature T2 in a tube when the valve 2 is so installed to form a heating circuit in which the refrigerant flows in the direction of an arrow with a solid line as to be switched to start the compressor 1 and a predetermined time is elapsed from the start of the compressor are measured by a temperature sensor 17. When the temperature rising widthΔT= T2-T1 becomes a predetermined temperature e.g. 2 deg.C or higher, the valve 2 is judged to be normally switched, while when it is less than the predetermined temperature, the valve 2 is judged not to be normally switched.
