PURPOSE: To provide a liquid crystal display device which has good display characteristics when viewed from diagonally and enables display of high luminance and high contrast by eliminating the need for superposing two sheets of cells and eliminating the need for providing the device with polarizing plates. CONSTITUTION: This liquid crystal display device is provided with a liquid crystal layer 9 having a guest-host effect between a pair of substrates 4 and 10 facing each other respectively having electrodes 6, 11 on the opposite surfaces. Projecting patterns 8, 13 for orienting liquid crystal molecules 9c respectively in prescribed directions are formed on the opposite surface sides of both substrates 4 and 10. The projecting patterns 8 on the one substrate 4 side and the projecting patterns 13 on the other substrate 10 side serve to make the liquid crystal layer 9 to two layers in such a manner that the liquid crystal molecules 9c are oriented in directions orthogonal with each other. |
