PURPOSE: To prevent the erroneous judgment of failure of an oxygen sensor by a combustible penetrated into the atmospheric electrode side of the oxygen sensor. CONSTITUTION: Whether a combustible is penetrated into the atmospheric electrode side of an oxygen sensor 16 or not is judged by a combustible penetration judging means 17, and when the penetration is judged, whether the atmospheric electrode side of the oxygen sensor 16 is recovered from the oxygen deficient state or not is judged by an oxygen deficient state recovery judging means 32. The judgment of failure by a sensor failure judging means 30 is invalidated until it is judged by the oxygen deficient state recovery judging means 32 that the atmospheric electrode side is recovered from the oxygen deficient state, and the notification of failure by an alarm means 31 is also canceled. The 'invalidation' herein means a general idea containing both that the judgment of failure itself is not executed (or prohibited), and that the judgment result is laid in the pending state (shelved state) when the judgment of failure is executed. |
