PURPOSE: To simply obtain the subject compound in high selectivity and in high yield by mixing a phenol compound, a quaternary ammonium bromide compound and bromine in a solvent. CONSTITUTION: A quaternary ammonium bromide of formula I (R1 -R4 are each an alkyl, aralkyl, aryl) and bromine are reacted with each other in a solvent (e.g. a mixture of acetic acid with water) and subsequently cooled to 0-20 deg.C. The reaction product is reacted with a phenol compound of formula II (V is H, nitro, amino) at 0-100 deg.C for 0.1-24hr to obtain the objective compound of formula III. The compound of formula I is preferably brominated with 1-5 equivalents of the bromine and 1-5 equivalents of the compound of formula II. The compound of formula III is useful as a synthetic intermediate or raw material for functional compounds such as medicines, herbicides, sterilizers, photographic additives, couplers for photographic sensitive materials, dyestuffs, spectral sensitive pigments, and laser pigments.
