<p>The invention concerns a method and an apparatus for encoding a wideband digital information signal. The apparatus comprises a signal splitting unit (2) for splitting the signal into M narrowband subsignals (SB1 to SBM). A scale factor is determined (6) for subsequent signal blocks in each subsignal. Bit allocation information is derived (34, 41, 48), representing the number of bits that quantized sample data (13) will be represented with. Block length information is derived (30), that represents the length of the subsequent signal blocks in the subsignal. The scale factor, the bit allocation information, and the quantization all depend upon the block length information. A formatting unit (20) combines the samples into a format suitable for transmission or storage. The block length information is included in the resulting signal.</p> |
