A conventional pultruded window frame is modified by the addition of a wood veneer (40) applied onto only those surfaces of the pultruded window frame which will constitute inside surfaces after completion of the window frame structure. The wood veneer is applied during the pultrusion process by drawing the wood veneer through the die (36) (so as to be applied directly onto the outside surface of the resin as the resin sets). An inside surface (52) of the veneer is directly applied onto the resin for aggressive bonding of the resin to the wood veneer. An outside surface (53) of the wood veneer is covered by a paper layer (41) which prevents the attractive outer surface of the wood veneer from becoming covered with the resin. A soaking (42) of the wood veneer is effected prior to forming for passage through the die to prevent penetration of the resin through the veneer to the outer surface which would effect contamination of the surface. |
