In a first stage, a homogeneous, non-self-igniting, pre-compressed fuel-air mixture is prepared in the work chamber (18). In a second stage, an additional amount of the same fuel is injected into the work chamber, in order to contribute to self-ignition. The first stage involves the preparation of a homogeneous fuel-air mixture by external mixture formation and its introduction into the work chamber for compression up to close to the self-ignition point.In the second stage, the injection of an additional amount takes place of finely atomised fuel, avoiding wall contact and forming a mixture mist (21). In this mist, the fuel-air ratio is not greater than the stoichiometric mixing ratio and self-ignition conditions are reached.
