A transfer device of an image forming machine has a belt unit (30) including a driving roller (43), a driven roller (49) disposed at a distance from the driving roller, a transfer belt (57) looped around the driving roller (43) and the driven roller (49), and a transfer roller (50) disposed opposite an image bearing member with the transfer belt (57) interposed therebetween; a contacting/separating means (100, 102, 103) for moving the belt unit (30) to a transfer position and a non-transfer position; and a voltage applying means for applying a predetermined voltage onto the transfer roller (50). The transfer roller (50) is disposed apart from the transfer belt (57), and when the belt unit (30) is brought to the transfer position by the contacting/separating means (100, 102, 103) the transfer roller (50) presses the transfer belt (57) against the image bearing member. <IMAGE> |
