A device (1) for identifying a fluid, particularly a hydrocarbon fluid to be transferred from a source tank with an outlet into a target tank with an inlet. The device comprises sensors (21, 22) for measuring at least one representative parameter of the fluid in the region of said inlet, and said sensors (21, 22) are connected to a processing means (33) for processing the value of the measured parameter in order to check that the fluid to be transferred is the same as the fluid in the target tank. Said device is particularly useful for identifying fuels during the filling of storage tanks at service stations.
