A method of in-situ heating of a ground soil having pollutants therein which it is desired to immobilise in the soil or to prevent or minimise migration thereof is described. The method comprises the steps of placing at least the reactants to produce a thermite-type reaction in said ground soil, said thermite-type reaction generating sufficient heat to promote at least partial ceramification of said soil adjacent said thermite-type reaction. <IMAGE>
