Method for the preparation of distyrylbiphenyl compounds of the formula (1) in which R1 denotes hydrogen, C1-C5-alkyl or halogen; M denotes a salt-forming colourless cation; n denotes 2 or 4, by condensation of a substituted or unsubstituted 4,4'-bis(dialkoxyphosphonomethyl)diphenyl compound with a substituted benzaldehyde in liquid ammonia as a solvent and in the presence of strong bases; and the use of these distyrylbiphenyl compounds as optical brighteners.
