PRODUCTION OF CHOLINE CARBONATE AND CHOLINE BICARBONATE HAVING HIGH PURITY

PURPOSE: To produce choline carbonate or choline bicarbonate having high purity and free from by-products. CONSTITUTION: An aqueous solution of choline containing a compound obtained by the addition of ethylene oxide to choline as a by-product is reacted with a host molecule such as 1,1'-bis-β-naphthol and the obtained choline-clathrated complex free from by-product is reacted with carbon dioxide gas to obtain an aqueous solution of high-purity choline carbonate or choline bicarbonate. The high-purity choline carbonate or choline bicarbonate can be converted to high-purity choline by electrolysis using an ion exchange membrane as a barrier membrane. Choline is a strongly basic compound and extremely useful as a developing liquid for photo-resist.
