A refractory slab (2) for use in an electrolytic cell has a top surface, a bottom surface and at least one engagement surface (2D) for engagement with a corresponding surface (1D) of an adjacent slab (1). The engagement surface (2D) has a top region and a bottom region that extends perpendicularly from respective top and bottom surfaces. The top and bottom regions are connected by a sloping region such that the angle between the sloping region and the top and bottom regions is greater than 90 DEG . The slabs eliminate straight lines at joints along which bath from the electrolytic cell may infiltrate during use. The engaging surfaces may also be arranged such that the slabs can be placed into position when forming a refractory lining by vertical movement alone, which can lead to shorter times for relining of the cell.
