Data processing system for television in digital or analog network

The processing system includes a user identification device (13) which uses a single or bidirectional coupling. Data compression and decompression are used to reduce transfer times. The system can be controlled by a remote controller (16) in the style of a conventional television remote control. The user can enter data and commands at the remote control. A CD-ROM player and disk reader/recorder (12) are coupled to the network (24). A video camera and microphone (40,41) allows direct sights and sound of the user to be passed onto the network.
