The method involves introducing a fluid and an ultrasonic source (9) into the gas bottle (1). The interior of the gas bottle is then subjected to ultrasonic treatment. The ultrasonic source and the fluid are removed from the bottle and the interior of the bottle is cleared of the remainder of the fluid by using, e.g. a warm inert gas. Water can be used as the fluid, or an acid or base can be added to the fluid.
