The support comprises a variable band for the formation of the bumper (8) which has a number of rigid mutually pivotable individual elements (24,25). These are arranged in the shape of a polygon. The individual elements are subject, in both swivelling directions, to the force of pretensioned springs (30-34) fitted in the connection zones. The individual elements are formed by frame parts.
