Simple prepn. of very uniform, partly substd., soluble cellulose sulphate

Prepn. of partly substd. soluble cellulose sulphate (SC) comprises: (a) prepn. of a homogeneous soln. of cellulose 2<1>/2-acetate (CA) in a polar aprotic solvent; (b) dripping a sulphating agent (I) into the soln. under non-sulphating conditions and dispersing this; (c) carrying out sulphation to DSS value 0.3-0.5; and (d) converting the resultant cellulose acetate-sulphate (CAS) to SC, purifying and drying.
