A device for the accelerated cooling of a fast-moving continuous substrate in a vertical plane, consisting of a closed chamber which includes, in the moving direction of the substrate, at least one main cooling region with a cooling fluid feed assembly, a secondary cooling region for promoting contact between the cooling fluid and the substrate, a cooling fluid removal region, and a fluid retaining assembly at the inlet and outlet of the cooling device. The main cooling region comprises assemblies such as spray booms for generating one or more water/air fog screens with a spatial arrangement such that they come into direct contact with the substrate to be cooled.
