A device for forming a seal around an elongate member comprises: (a) a sealing material having a surface onto which the elongate member can be placed; (b) means for displacing the elongate member substantially laterally into the sealing material; and (c) means for applying a force to said surface after displacement of the elongate member thereby putting the sealing material under pressure.
