The method involves using a digital measurement apparatus which is connected to an A/D convertor (2) which has two modes of conversion. A first mode is fast, with low precision, and a second mode is slow with high precision. The A/D converter is controlled by a microprocessor (3) which includes a module (8) to measure the stability of measurements sent to an analogue and digital display unit (4,5,6). If the measurements are varying slowly, the slow, high precision conversion mode is used. If the measurements are changing quickly, the high speed, low precision mode is used.
