In a high temperature rechargeable cell 10 comprising a casing (12, 14) defining anode and cathode compartments respectively for containing anode alkali metal and liquid electrolyte, the cell having an operating temperature at which the anode and liquid electrolyte are molten, a solid electrolyte separator sheet (16) which is a conductor of anode alkali metal ions and a casing comprising cathode and anode covers (12, 14) enclosing opposite sides of the separator, the covers being electronically conductive but insulated from each other and forming cell terminals, the separator has a curved concave anode-side surface (34), the cathode cover is inflexible and spaced from the separator cathode-side surface (32) and the anode cover is flexible. The cell has a fully discharged/overdischarged state in which the anode compartment is empty of alkali metal, and in which the anode cover has a convex surface which nests in the separator concave surface. An insulating ring 18 is hermetically bonded to the periphery of the separator, two metal rings 20, 22 being bonded to ring 18. The ring 18 may project radially outwardly of the metal rings to centre the cell in a housing and profiled to facilitate transport of temperature control fluids or to house temperature control elements. <IMAGE> |
