CORDIERITE HONEYCOMB STRUCTURE AND ITS PRODUCTION

PURPOSE: To produce a cordierite honeycomb structure capable of accelerating the early activation of a catalyst. CONSTITUTION: This cordierite honeycomb structure has >=0.035J/cm. deg.K.sec heat conductivity and <=1.0×10<6> / deg.C coefft. of thermal expansion at 40-800 deg.C and preferably has <=16% porosity. This honeycomb structure is produced as follows; powders of kaolin, talc and other starting materials for cordierite are mixed so as to obtain the chemical compsn. of cordierite and the resultant mixture is extruded and sintered. The kaolin used has <=5μm average particle diameter and includes <=10wt.% particles each having <1μm particle diameter. The talc has <=10μm average particle diameter and includes <=5wt.% particles each having <1μm particle diameter.
