PURPOSE: To make it possible to obtain a high modulation degree with both of visible light and IR rays and to make modulation at a high response speed and high frequency. CONSTITUTION: This liquid crystal thick film cell type optical modulator 1 consists of the thick film cell formed by enclosing ferroelectric liquid crystals 4 between a pair of electrode plates 2, 3 facing each other and a means 7 for impressing voltage to both electrode plates 2, 3 of this thick film cell. The cell gap of the thick film cell is >=50μm and the ferroelectric liquid crystals 4 to be enclosed exhibit a helical pitch in a smectic C phase of a length of 0.7 to 0.95 times the cell gap. The liquid crystal thick film cell type optical modulator 1 consists of the thick film cell formed by enclosing ferroelectric liquid crystals 4 between a pair of electrode plates 2, 3 facing each other and a means 7 for impressing voltage to both electrode plates 2, 3 of this thick film cell. The pulse voltage of voltage waveforms having a duty ratio asymmetrical with positive and negative poles and/or the voltage formed by superposing square wave voltage on a bias DC voltage is impressed on the electrode plates by the means 7 for impressing voltage, by which the ferroelectric liquid crystals 4 are driven.
