PURPOSE: To automatically search for a model image so as to register it, to prevent errorneous registration and to eliminate the need of the experience of an operator. CONSTITUTION: An edge image I' obtained by differentiating an image which is image-picked up is displayed on a display screen 20, and the window W of a prescribed size is scanned on the display screen. Density sums in the respective windows W are obtained, and a position where the density sum becomes the largest value is extracted. The image in the window in the extracted position is automatically registered as the model image. When the images becoming candidates exist in plural places, they are displayed so that an operator select one of them. When the plural candidates exist, the position where the density sum becomes the maximum in areas except for the position is extracted and it is automatically registered as the model image. |
