An optical device and method for three-dimensional digitising comprising a detector (4) and two or more projected patterns (2, 13) of different period, whereby the phase distribution of each pattern imaged by the detector (4) is determined by phase-stepping a second, virtual, pattern across the detected image, the relationship between phase values and three-dimensional object co-ordinates is determined by repeatedly moving a known target through a prescribed volume, which relationship is stored, and three-dimensional co-ordinates of the surface of an object (3) placed within the prescribed volume are subsequently determined by correlating the detected and stored phase in all the projected patterns. |
