A circuit for suppressing transient voltages in an electrical signal transmitted by a first transmission line. The circuit comprises a rectifier circuit (505) having a first input, a second input, a first output, and a second output, wherein the first input is coupled to the first transmission line (406a) and the second input is coupled to a second transmission line. A positive rail (501) is coupled to the first output of the full-wave rectifier circuit, and a negative rail (502) is coupled to the second output of the full-wave rectifier circuit. A capacitor (510) is coupled between the positive and negative rails. The capacitor stores the energy of a transient so that the energy of the transient may be dissipated over time. A clamping circuit (512) is coupled across the capacitor. The clamping circuit defines a clamping voltage for the capacitor and dissipates charge stored in the capacitor when the capacitor is charged to a voltage exceeding a clamping voltage such that the voltage of the capacitor is reduced to the clamping voltage.
