Improved turf units for assembling a natural turf playing surface in a stadium or the like. Natural turf units are provided which are transportable between a first and second locations, the second location being for the growth and the first area being the location of the desired activity. Each turf unit including a fence (30) hingeably connected to growing pan or tray (28). The outer periphery of the fence (30) extends beyond the outer periphery of the growing pans (28) such that, when the turf units are assembled to create a playing surface, large areas (36) exist beneath the growing surface.
