The combustion engine lubricating oil system consists of a pump which supplies oil from a sump at pressure to lubrication points. An oil filter (20) is located in the oil system and consists of two gap, sinter or sieve filter members (20a,20b) located behind each other, one of which can be shut off via a pressure dependent bypass valve (48,49). The filter and bypass valve are pref. located in a common filter housing. The two filters pref. have a different mesh width.
