Described is a pigment for coating pressure-sensitive paper, particularly a colour pigment for duplicating paper, the pigment being made of at least one acid-activated alkali-metal and/or alkaline-earth smectite. The pigment is characterized in that the alkali-metal and/or alkaline-earth smectite is partially activated with at least one Brönstedt and/or Lewis acid and has an amorphous silicic acid content of at the most 15 % by wt., a swell volume of 5 to 30 ml/2 g, a specific surface area of less than about 140 m<2>/g and a Brookfield viscosity of about 200 to 1000 mPa.s (measured in a suspension with a solids content of 25 % by wt., a latex content of 5 % by wt. and a pH of 9).
