A vaginal speculum (10) comprising a body (11) of resiliently flexible sheet material. The body has a first condition in which it is substantially flat. The body (11) is resiliently bendable out of the first condition for insertion into a vagina and is resiliently expandable to return towards the first condition for bearing against the vaginal walls thereby to cause dilation of the vagina. The resiliently expandable nature of the body (11) ensures that there is positive engagement with the vaginal walls. The body (11) presents three spaced apart zones (31, 33) for gripping engagement with the vaginal walls to inhibit unintentional withdrawal of the speculum from the vagina.
