The method is novel in that a) the stagnation shock caused by run-on or lift-up of the strip front (17) at rollers is substantially reduced or completely eliminated, b) the lay-on pattern of the (in particular, wavy) strip on rollers is improved by a top waviness limiting device, preferably by one which applies compressed air. As a result, the stagnation pressure arising from strip velocity reduction (from the rolling velocity) is reduced/eliminated. Also claimed is the device for performing the above where the gaps between conveyor rollers are spanned by cover plates at a level close to the level of roller tops. Water-cooled waviness limiting plates (24) - whose undersides are preferably provided with compressed air outlets - are located above the conveyor so that their height is adjustable.
