Process for forming long thin slots in a workpiece suitable for extrusion dies involves using wire cutting electrical discharge machining (EDM). The process comprises forming several spaced-apart slots along one direction across a workpiece surface with sufficient space between the slots so that when the workpiece is rotated through 180[deg] a discharge machining pass can be made cutting slots which are cut from the opposite direction and lie between the first slots cut on the first machining pass. Each slot formed has an entrance end which is adjacent to the exit end of the slot lying on either side. In forming a die for extruding cellular or honeycomb structures several parallel spaced-apart slots are formed at 90[deg] to the first row of slots formed cross the face of the die. These slots are also cut so that the entrance to each slot lies next to the exit of the slot adjacent to it.
|
