A cosmetic or dermatological compsn. comprises at least one esterified dihydroxyacetone (DHA) deriv. of formula RO-CH2-CO-CH2-OR' (I) in a cosmetic or dermatological carrier. Also claimed is a compsn. contg. at least one cpd. (I) and at least one cpd. (II) capable of cleaving at least one ester bond. R,R' = H or linear, branched or cyclic, satd. or unsatd., opt. hydroxylated, 2-25C (pref. 3-18C) acyl; provided that R and R' are not both H.
