The invention relates to a vertically folding door, comprising: two rails which are each arranged on one side of the opening which is to be closed off by the door and extend substantially vertically; a number of panels which are guided by the two rails and are pivotably connected to one another; guide means, which adjoin the topside of each of the rails, for guiding the panels in such a manner that, when they move upwards, they are folded together in zigzag form in a substantially horizontal direction above the rails by means of hinge joints; actuating means for driving at least one of the panels in the vertical direction, the guide means being designed so that the panels, starting from the vertical movement, are gradually diverted into the horizontal direction. As a result of this measure, a purely vertical movement is gradually converted into a movement with a horizontal component, so that the dynamic forces acting on the components in question are lower and consequently the speed can be increased considerably.
